Tuticorin Paniya Matha Church, also known as the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Snow is not only one of the most famous pilgrim centre for the Roman Catholic christians, but also a famous tourist attraction in Thoothukudi. It is believed that the great St. Francis visited here in 1542.
Every year the Thoothukudi Panimaya Matha Church festival will be celebrated in the month of July / August. This year also, the Thoothukudi Panimaya Matha Church festival 2023 has commenced on 26th July. Lakhs of people from Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and through out India come to celebrate the festival.
About the Church
This is the 441st festival of Tuticorin Panimaya Matha Church. Devotees from abroad including Sri Lanka and Singapore will also participate in the festival. This famous church was built by the Portuguese. It is said to be around 1,500 years old.
This festival is celebrated by all without caste and religious discrimination in this church. Tuticorin city is full of festivities on the occasion of the Chruch festival.
On the 10th day, the main event of the festival will be the Golden Chariot procession of Panimaya Matha through the streets of the city.

The District Collector has ordered a local holiday for Thoothukudi district on August 5 on the occasion of the Procession of the Golden Chariot of Our Lady of Snow.
